Inclusion

We pride ourselves on being a very inclusive school. We value and celebrate the rich diversity of our school community and make every effort to enable children, parents and staff alike to participate fully in the life of the School.

We believe that every child is entitled to equal access to the curriculum that we provide. We endeavour to ensure equal access for all our pupils through appropriate planning, teaching, monitoring and assessment of the curriculum and through appropriate adaptation of the learning and physical environment as necessary.


Principles

At Southbroom Infants’ School we adopt the following principles regarding successful inclusive education:

  • To ensure all pupils are offered personalised access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.
  • All pupils will be given the opportunity to reach their full potential educationally, emotionally and physically irrespective of their individual differences.
  • All pupils have equal entitlement to high quality teaching.
  • Pupils’ views are sought and taken into account.
  • A strong working partnership and effective dialogue with parents and carers is essential.
  • To ensure transition into school meet the needs of the child.

Definitions of Special Educational Needs (SEN) — Section 20 of the Children and Families Act 2014

A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability that calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:

a) Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or;

b) Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.

A child under compulsory school age has special educational needs if they fall within the definition at (a) or (b) above or would do so if special educational provision was not made for them.

Children must not be regarded as having a learning difficulty solely because the language or form of language of their home is different from the language in which they will be taught.
