Pupil Premium Grant

Pupil Premium Grant

The ‘Pupil Premium’ grant is funding provided to help schools support specific groups of children who may be in danger of making less progress than others. Its aim is to ‘close the gap’ between how well children from low-income and other disadvantaged families do compared to their peers. How much pupil premium funding a school receives is determined by the number of children:

  • Eligible for free school meals (FSM)
  • With parents who serve in the armed forces
  • Adopted from care
  • In local authority care.

Providing Support

At Southbroom Infants School we are committed to ensuring all our children make the best possible progress by ensuring teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils. We track the achievement of every child on a regular basis and do all we can to make sure each child achieves their potential. We also have a duty to ensure that no group of children are disadvantaged due to their gender, ethnic origin or family income or background. We recognise that not all children eligible for the Pupil Premium are disadvantaged and that some children who are not eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant are disadvantaged. So we do not use eligibility for the Grant as the way to decide whether or not additional support is provided. All our work funded by the Pupil Premium is aimed at accelerating progress and moving children to at least age related expectations. Primarily this will be in literacy and numeracy whilst also acknowledging the affect that behaviour, emotional development and attendance has on progress in these and other areas.

Measuring Impact

The impact of pupil premium activities across the school is incorporated in detailed analysis of pupil achievement, undertaken regularly and reported to school governors.  An indication of how well children eligible for Pupil Premium funding have done is the ‘gap’ between their performance and that of others in their class.
