OUR GOVERNING BODY

What our Governing Body does

Our governing body plays an important role, complementing and enhancing school leadership by:

  • providing support and challenge,
  • ensuring that all statutory duties are met,
  • appointing the headteacher and
  • holding them to account for the impact of the school’s work on improving outcomes for all pupils.

Our governors who are all volunteers and include parents, staff and members of our local community, bring a wide range of skills and expertise to support the leadership of our school.  They are all interested in and enthusiastic about the education of all the children at Southbroom Infants School.  Our governing body constantly asks ‘Are we doing the best we can for our children?’

How our Governing Body works

Our Governing Body consists of 12 governors:

  • Four Parent Governors, who would be elected by parents
  • Two Staff Governors, one who is the headteacher and the other being chosen by staff
  • Five Co-opted Governors, who would be chosen by the Governing Body to bring expertise and specific skills, these governors would often be from the local community

Under our Scheme of Delegation a Chair and Vice Chair is elected by the Governing Body each September.

The  Full Governing Body Chair is Mr Colin Carter and the Vice-Chair is Mrs Rebecca Thompson.  The Whistleblowing Governor is Mr Colin Carter.

Governors are also linked to specific areas of the curriculum, activities or functions.  This provides a link between the Governing Body and the teachers and helps governors get to know the school better by regular visits.  Governors therefore have a better understanding of how the curriculum and policies impact on pupils and their learning.

The Full Governing Body meets at least six times a year.

The White Horse Federation LBG

Each school has its own Local Governing Body (LGB). The Chair of each LGB will also sit on a collective group of similar Chairs from which one representative will be elected and then co-opted onto the Executive Board; this process will be repeated every two years thus affording new Chairs the opportunity to be similarly elected.

TWHF Executive Board has clearly identified the areas of responsibility that they delegate to the LGBs. Although not in any way legally responsible and not itself accountable for the statutory functions, the LGB has an important role to play in assisting the school to operate effectively in line with the wishes of TWHF Executive Board as communicated to the LGB. Meet Our Governors

For the academic year 2015 – 2016, and 2016-17 the Governing body includes:

Parent Governors

    Colin Carter

My wife Sarah and I have lived in Devizes since 2001. We have two children turning 8 and 5 this year. One has moved to Southbroom St James Academy having finished three years at Southbroom Infants and the youngest has started in the reception year at Southbroom Infants this September. I became a parent governor first and enjoyed the involvement it gave me with the School. I then took my current role of Chair of Governors in September 2014. To work with all the teachers, staff, parents and the governing body has been very rewarding and I look forward to continuing to do so.

    Ellen Woodroffe

    Appointed 20 June 2016

    Pascale Palmer

I moved to Devizes in 2016 with my partner and two daughters, who are 7 and 4 years old. My youngest will start at Southbroom Infants in September and my eldest will move onto Southbroom St James Academy. I used to work in childcare and schools as a Montessori Teacher, whilst utilising my Psychology degree. Since my daughters were born I have taken a career break to raise them until school age.
I am looking forward to working alongside our teachers, staff, parents and governing body. I would love to help and support the school in any way I can.

    Sally Dunford

I have lived in Devizes with my husband for 16 years.  We have two daughters, 9 and 7.  My youngest daughter is currently in Year 2 at Souhtbroom Infants and my eldest was here previously before moving up to Southbroom St James Academy.  I have been involved as a Governor for 4 years and am Vice-Chair.  It is an enjoyable role that allows me to help and support the school.

LA Governor

    Rebecca Thompson

My son joined the reception year at Southbroom Infants’ in September 2014.  I would like to contribute to the continued success of the school, helping shape its future by being a part of the Governing Body.  I am a mother of two and a qualified solicitor, currently on a career break whilst my children are still small.  My last employment was with Wiltshire Council, where my role involved advising members and officers on education issues.

Co-opted Governors

    Jenny Crowe

My family and I moved to Devizes in May 2009 and my daughter joined Southbroom Infants School in the September. I have been a governor ever since! My daughter and son have since moved on to the Junior school.  I was Chair from 2011 to 2014.  I really enjoy working with all the staff and governors to support and challenge the school.

Staff Governor

    Susi Waters

I currently teach in Year 2 and I am also the school’s Special needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). I have been a teacher at Southbroom Infants since 2004 and I really wouldn’t want to work anywhere else!
