Our theme for the Spring is space and as you can see our learning is out of this world!
In year 2 we are very successful in developing independent learners and we encourage them to take more responsibility around the school. We make it a priority to deliver a creative and stimulating curriculum. We are very good at developing cross curricula links.
The teachers plan together to ensure the curriculum is both differentiated and engaging and covers the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding for KS1. We engage the children using a variety of resources including the internet, artefacts, visits to the local area and by inviting visitors into school. This is further enhanced by 'theme' weeks which happen throughout the year. Children's story making skills are developed through a range of activiites e.g. drama. All Yr 2 classes have discrete teaching of phonics, handwriting, guided reading, PE and numeracy
Mathematics is taught practically where appropiate. The basic skills of Numeracy are taught through daily counting; including the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There are lots of oportunities to apply these skills which leads to building confidence in numeracy, for example: open ended problem solving activities. We also have a set of numeracy games which the children use in class and borrow to take home each week.
The children are actively encouraged to support each other and always try their best. Rewards and certificates can be earned for positive attitudes, application to tasks and good learning. At the end of year 2 most children transfer to our partner junior school, Southbroom St James Academy. In order to ensure that this step in the children's learning journey is smooth and continuous we have a programme of fun visits, from Christmas Carols to a Joint Numeracy Challenge Morning.
