Year 1 Term 4 Newsletter to Parents
In Year 1 we build on the excellent start made in the Foundation Stage and help the children move happily and securely to the next phase in their education. Our curriculum is based on first hand experiences enabling children to see, hear, touch and talk about "real things". The children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning by being offered choices and having flexibility of when they undertake an independent activity.
Throughout the school year children in year one learn through creative, child centered topics which aim to fully engage and excite all children. We aim to build a child's confidence in their own learning by allowing them to choose the level at which they learn, encouraging and supporting them along the way. Where possible we use and explore the local environment to develop the children's knowledge and experiences. Some of the places that we have visited are the library, the museum, the market and Drew's pond wood.
We believe in active learning and we give the children a variety of strategies, practical and formal, to use as they learn new things across the curriculum. Some examples are making puppets, drawing story maps in literacy, singing songs and playing games in numeracy.
